Café com Física: “Emaranhamento e fundamentos da mecânica estatística”

Palestrante: Thiago Rodrigues de Oliveira

Abstract:

Recent results suggest that the use of ensembles in Statistical Mechanics may not be necessary for isolated systems, since typically the states of the Hilbert space would have properties similar to the ones of the ensemble. Nevertheless, it is often argued that most of the states of the Hilbert space are non-physical and not good descriptions of realistic systems. Therefore, to better understand the actual power of typicality it is important to ask if it is also a property of a set of physically relevant states. Here we address this issue, studying if and how typicality emerges in the set of matrix product states. We show analytically that typicality occurs for the expectation value of subsystems’ observables when the rank of the matrix product state scales polynomially with the size of the system with a power greater than two. We illustrate this result numerically and present some indications that typicality may appear already for a linear scaling of the rank of the matrix product state.

Café com Física: “Vortex solutions in the extended Skyrme-Faddeev model”

Seminarista: Nobuyuki Sawado (Departamento da Tokyo University of Science)

Resumo:

The extended Skyrme-Faddeev model is a theory which is an extension of the Skyrme-Faddeev model by the addition of a further quartic term in derivatives. It is one of the possible candidates of a low energy effective model of the pure SU(2) Yang-Mills theory, and the results should contain some information in that strong coupling regime. In recent years, several vortex solutions have been found in the model.

They are definitely different from known vortex solutions like Nielsen-Olesen type because they are objects of the pure SU(2) Yang-Mills. In this seminar, I shall give discussions especially on the following topics.

(i) The connection between the model and the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory

(ii) The integrability

(iii) The new vortex solutions on the model

Seminário da Biofotônica

Título: “Revising the Calculation of Energy Densities for Matter and Electromagnetic Wave Interaction”

Palestrante: Frederico Dias Nunes (Universidade Federal de Pernambuco-UFPE)

Resumo:

For many years the description of density of energy associated with an electromagnetic field propagating in dispersive and dissipative media have been analyzed extensively. Brillouin approach requires smooth dependence of permittivity on optical frequency and Loudon approach uses a single resonant frequency. This work analyzes energy density for an electromagnetic field propagating in materials as Aluminum and Gold for which Brillouin as well Loudon approaches are not adequate because this materials have resonances, leading to large derivative values around resonant frequencies, and require multi-Lorentz description for permittivity modeling. For those reasons energy density is calculated using traditional way however with no Taylor expansion or approximations and analytical results are obtained. Also Energy density is calculated using multi-Lorentz approach in a similar way of that of Loudon. The results of both approaches are obtained and compared and differences are pointed out.

Seminário da Biofotônica: “Optical Coherence Tomography: Development and applications”

Nesta ocasião, Anderson discutirá o tema OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY: DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATIONS”.

Abstract:

This talk will be an overview of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) technique, covering from the physical basics principles, image formation process to state of art applications. It was revolutionary in areas such as ophthalmology and dermatology, in which other tomographic techniques does not reach resolutions like OCT has.  In early 90´s Fujimoto et al. applied the principles of low coherence interferometry to perform high resolution tomographic images of biological tissues. The technique became known as OCT and opened new horizons in several areas of knowledge. It was revolutionary in areas such as ophthalmology and dermatology. The OCT breakthrough was the capability of obtain histological retina image in vivo, in real time in non-invasive way and using harmless radiation.
