Minicurso Solitons

DATA: 14 de Maio de 2018 HORA: 11h00

LOCAL: Sala F-210 (IFSC/USP)

TÍTULO DA APRESENTAÇÃO: “The idea of solitons”

PALESTRANTE: Prof. Gabriel Luchini (UFES – Vitória)

Our current understanding of the World (where only inertial frames are taken into account and gravity plays no role!) is based on the idea of fields which, at the quantum level, give rise to what we understand as the fundamental constituents of Nature: particles. In this lecture, another approach to particles shall be discussed: it will be shown how to construct a moving lump of energy (our common sense idea of what a particle is) using a classical field. The dynamics of this particle, called soliton, will be discussed, as well as some aspects of its scattering processes.

HORA: 11h15

LOCAL: Sala F-210 (IFSC/USP)

TÍTULO DA APRESENTAÇÃO: “Self-dual solitons”

PALESTRANTE: Prof. Luiz Agostinho Ferreira (IFSC/USP)
In this lecture, an introduction to the concept of self-duality will be given. Moreover, examples of self-dual solitons such as kinks, skyrmions, monopoles etc. will be discussed.

HORA: 14h00

LOCAL: Anfiteatro Novo (IFSC/USP)

TÍTULO DA APRESENTAÇÃO: “Topological solitons (+ gravity)”

PALESTRANTE: Prof.a Betti Hartmann (IFSC/USP)

Topological solitons are a specific kind of solitons that arises (frequently) in theories with spontaneous symmetry breaking. Topology plays an important role in these cases and results from the non-triviality of the ground state of the model and the requirement of finite energy of the soliton solutions. In this lecture, mainly two examples of topological solitons will be discussed: vortices (a.k.a. cosmic strings) and magnetic monopoles, both in flat and curved space-time.
