Abstract: Phosphate glasses have attracted significant attention as optical host materials due to their versatility, low dispersion, relatively high refractive index, and excellent solubility for heavy metal oxides. However, extending their transparency into the mid-infrared region and enhancing both linear and nonlinear optical properties remains a challenge for broader applicability. Bismuth polyphosphate-based glasses containing bismuth oxide ( ) and sodium oxide ( ) have emerged as a strategy to improve infrared transmission and enhance optical properties. The nonlinear refractive index (n2) was determined using the Nonlinear Elliptic Rotation (NER) technique. To gain deeper insight into the origin of the observed enhancement, structural characterizations were performed by FTIR and Raman spectroscopies. A 59 % increase in n2 was observed, rising from 1.02 x 10-19 m2/W (BBN) to 1.63 x 10-19 m2/W (BB20N) with the incorporation of in the glass matrix, without nonlinear absorption. FTIR spectra exhibited a shift in the 2914 cm-1 band, related to the P-O-H vibrations, indicating the formation of non-bridging oxygens (NBO). This was corroborated by Raman spectroscopy, which revealed that although contributes more effectively to the formation of non-bridging oxygens (NBOs) than , it induces only limited depolymerization of the phosphobismuthate network. In contrast, the significant increase in n2 with addition is more closely related to the high polarizability of rather than to the generation of NBOs alone. The studied glasses demonstrate excellent potential for nonlinear photonics, combining high n2 values, up to five times that of fused silica, with a broad transmission window spanning the visible to mid-infrared region.
