Resume:

Luis Felipe Santos Mendes is an Associated Professor in the Group of Biophysics and Structural Biology "Sergio Mascarenhas" at the São Carlos Institute of Physics, University of São Paulo. I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Biomolecular Physics from IFSC/USP in 2011, followed by a PhD in Physics Applied to Medicine and Biology from FFCLRP/USP in 2018. During my PhD, I had the opportunity to enhance my academic training and research at internationally renowned institutions, such as the Biomembrane Structure Unit at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Anthony Watts, the Laboratory für Physikalische Chemie at ETH Zurich with Prof. Dr. Gunnar Jeschke, and the Chemistry Department at NCSU-USA, guided by Prof. Dr. Alex I. Smirnov. My doctoral thesis was recognized by the Brazilian Physical Society as the best in the field of Biological Physics for the biennium 2017/2018. After completing my PhD, I worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the BioNMR group at the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Sciences of ETH Zurich and in the Department of Physics at FFCLRP/USP, from 2018 to 2022. My research focuses on unraveling the complex functional mechanisms of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) and protein hybrids with both ordered and intrinsically disordered regions (IDPRs), using a wide range of biophysical and biochemical methods. This work is crucial for understanding the native, droplet, and amyloid states of these proteins, essential for elucidating their roles in both physiological and pathological conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's diseases. I possess expertise in classical molecular biology methodologies, such as cloning, subcloning, mutant construction, and expression/purification of heterologous soluble and membrane proteins, in addition to advanced spectroscopy and calorimetry techniques, including Circular Dichroism (conventional and synchrotron radiation), fluorescence (steady-state and lifetime techniques), Magnetic Resonance (electronic and nuclear), and Differential Scanning Fluorometry and Calorimetry (DSF and DSC).
