Colloquium diei: “Experiments with strongly interacting atomic Fermi gases”

Colloquium_Diei-loguinhoWe will present two paradigmatic and extreme experimental studies, exploiting strongly interacting ultracold Fermi gases of 6Li atoms confined in optical potentials.

In a first experiment, we create the analogous of a Josephson junction by bisecting BEC-BCS crossover superfluids with a thin optical barrier. We observe coherent dynamics in both the population and in the relative phase between the two superfluid reservoirs, extracting the Josephson coupling energy, which appears to be maximum for unitary superfluids. For critical parameters, we see how the Josephson dynamics is strongly affected by the presence of topological defects entering the superfluid bulk.

In a second experiment, we create an artificial ferromagnetic state by segregating degenerate spin mixtures into two initially disconnected reservoirs. We study the spin dynamics for different interaction strengths and temperatures. For sufficiently high values of the inter-spin repulsive interactions and at sufficiently low temperatures, we observe a time window during which spin diffusion is zeroed, that we interpret as signature of the Stoner instability in our system.Parallel to this, we reveal the ferromagnetic behaviour of the system by observing a softening of the spin dipole mode. At long evolution times, once the ferromagnetic state has relaxed onto lower energy states of the many-body system, our measurements provide exciting new insights into the behaviour of the spin drag coefficient within temperature regimes so far not accessed in previous experiments.

Colloquium diei: “Emerging (spin) physics in graphene and novel two-dimensional materials”

Colloquium_Diei-loguinhoGraphene is fascinating in many ways. It is an ultimately thin and unusually strong material, an almost perfect electrical and heat conductor, and a test tube for universal relativistic Dirac physics in a solid. Its optical absorption is given by the fine structure constant. What about its spin properties? Is graphene a perfect spin conductor? In this colloquium I will introduce graphene and other novel two-dimensional materials, describe their surprising and unusual physical properties, and then touch upon some new spin physics they exhibit. The spin physics will be related to the spin-orbit (Rashba) fields and topological quantum spin Hall effects.

Band structure topologies of graphene. Without spin-orbit coupling (SOC) graphene bands exhibit the familiar Dirac cones touching at the Dirac point. With spin-orbit coupling, graphene exhibits a finite gap. If a transverse electric field is applied, breaking the space inversion symmetry of graphene, bands are further spin split by the Rashba effect. The magnitude of the electric field determines the band topology.

Journal club: “Observing an emergence of the arrow of time in a quantum system”

JC-_loguinhoIrreversibility is one of the most intriguing concepts in physics. While microscopic physical laws are perfectly reversible, macroscopic average behavior (and our daily experience) has a preferred direction of time. How can irreversibility be a consequence of reversible laws, especially Schrödinger’s equation?

According to Thermodynamics, entropy of the Universe never decreases. Although this is a powerful argument in some cases, it can be generalized to stronger statements about the behaviour of systems away from equilibrium. At this point, a connection is made with Information Theory, where there is also a concept with the name ‘entropy’, with a wider meaning.

The discussion is applied to a recent experiment with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, in which the spin 1/2 of an atomic nucles is used as a thermodynamics system. We analyse the concepts of entropy production and irreversibility in this microscopic system in a completely quantum context.

Colloquium diei: “Electric field cancellation on quartz by Rb adsorbate”

Colloquium_Diei-loguinhoWe investigate the (0001) surface of single crystal quartz with a submonolayer of Rb adsorbates. Using Rydberg atom electromagnetically induced transparency, we investigate the electric fields resulting from Rb adsorbed on the quartz surface, and measure the activation energy of the Rb adsorbates. We show that the adsorbed Rb induces a negative electron affinity (NEA) on the quartz surface. The NEA surface allows low energy electrons to bind to the surface and cancel the electric field from the Rb adsorbates. Our results are important for integrating Rydberg atoms into hybrid quantum systems and the fundamental study of atom-surface interactions, as well as applications for electrons bound to a 2D surface.

Journal Club: “Quantum mechanics in Metric Space”

Density Functional Theory (DFT) has provide so far the most JC-_loguinhosuccesful tools for realistic calculations of the properties of complex quantum system. We investigate the fundamental problems related to DFT by developing new methods based on the role of metric spaces in quantum mechanics. In our previous works the metric properties of ground state wavefunction and desity were explored for the non-magnetic and magnetic quantum systems. Currently we are developing a new method for the investigation of the metric properties for the exchange functional by exploiting the special features of the exchange x-hole functional. A better understanding of this mapping is conducive to the possibility of improving the quality of the exchange-correlation functional currently used in DFT.

Colloquium diei: “Magnetos frustrados”

Colloquium diei: “Cosmology with the Planck satellite”

Colloquium_Diei-loguinhoSketched out in 1992, selected by ESA in 1996, and launched in 2009, the Planck satellite was shut off in 2013, after a measuring stage of the mission that collected over a trillion samples and exceeded all expectations. The Planck collaboration delivered a first set of cosmological data and results in March 21st 2013, and the full set in February 2015. Part of the data delivery is a “definitive” map of the anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), its angular power spectrum together with its full statistical characterisation, and the implications for cosmology. The 2015 delivery further includes pioneering polarisation maps, spectra, and their analyses.

The temperature anisotropy map displays minuscule variations as a function of the observing direction, of rms ~100microK,  of the fossil radiation around its mean temperature of 2.725K. Other maps reveal the CMB polarisation patterns. These anisotropies are the imprint of the primordial fluctuations which initiated the growth of the large scale structures of the Universe, as transformed by their evolution, in particular during the first 370 000 years. These anisotropies can then be confronted with theoretical expectations.

I will described the results we obtained  so far, both in terms of content of the universe and of characteristics of the primordial fluctuations which are found to match very well with expectations from an early inflationary phase in a Universe filled with cold dark matter and whose expansion recently started to accelerate.

Seminário Especial: “Molecular mechanisms of tubulin heterogeneity”

Annemarie did her PhD work on the structural and fuctional characterization of mycobacterial Ser/Thr protein kinases sem-especialand phosphatases in the lab of P. Alzari at the Institut Pasteur (Paris; France). She then did a postdoc in the lab of A. Musacchio at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan (Italy) and later at the Max Planck Institute (Dortmund; Germany). At the time the Musacchio lab was a pioneering european lab of integrative biology where both structural and cell biology approaches were used in synergy to address major biological questions. This work was focused on the structural and functional study of a large kinetochore complex (RZZ) involved in chromosome segregation during mitosis and a critical constituent of metazoan kinetochores (KTs).

During the postdoc time in the Musacchio lab she developed independent interests on microtubules and cilia biology, and was awarded a 3-year grant to work on an independent project in the lab of C. Janke at the Institut Curie (Orsay; France). The goal of this project was to work towards understanding the molecular mechanisms and functions of tubulin heterogeneity. The C-terminal domain of tubulin is crucial for determining microtubule identities as it is a hub for both genetically encoded, and post-translationally added tubulin heterogeneity. In order to study how spatially and temporally controlled modification patterns determine the properties and the functional fate of microtubules, we have set out to develop a series of tubulin tools that will allow for a controlled and systematic study of a specific modification of tubulin: glycylation. Annemarie will present the latest results on heterologous expression of recombinant tubulin and functional characterization of a tubulin-modifying enzyme TTLL3.

A behavioral analysis of cellular automata

Catalyzed by the emergence of modern sem-especialcomputers, cellular automata (CAs) became a full-fledged research domain in the eighties of the previous century. The relevant literature is of a dichotomous nature in the sense that studies either focus on the spatio-temporal dynamics that is evolved by CAs, while others merely use the CA paradigm to build a model for a given biological, natural or physical process. It goes without saying that a profound understanding of CA dynamics is a prerequisite for building realistic, identifiable CA-based models, though this is not straightforward due the fact that a CA is discrete in all its senses (state, time, space). In an attempt to quantify CA behavior in a meaningful and reproducible way, several so-called behavioral measures have been proposed during the last two decades. Here, we will show how Lyapunov exponents and Boolean derivatives can be used to get a complete picture of CA dynamics in the sense that they not only make it possible to unravel the nature of a given CA, but also allow for assessing the effect of changing model design parameters on the CA behavior, an understanding that is a prerequisite for CA-based models to become appreciated as a full-fledged modeling paradigm. Besides, it will be demonstrated that the scope of these measures is not limited to two-state CAs.
